ChatGPT Visual Ads: Keep the Still, Crop Out the Chrome

OpenAI will test labeled visual ads beside ChatGPT image generation in the US. Keep the SKU, export without chrome, and overlay copy last.

ChatGPT Visual Ads: Keep the Still, Crop Out the Chrome

On 5 October 2026 OpenAI said it will test a new visual ad format during ChatGPT image generation later this month in the United States, with an initial group of advertisers. The ads are labeled. They sit beside the image you asked for; they do not go inside it. OpenAI says advertising does not change ChatGPT’s answers and does not alter what the model draws. That is a UI change, not a new brief. If you make catalog stills, social ads, or posters, treat the neighboring ad as chrome: do not screenshot it into the file, do not iterate on the advertised SKU, and leave prices empty. Export the generated image from a dedicated workspace. Overlay real copy last.

Draft the still in FreeGPTImg. Stay on GPT Image 2 for the loop in front of you, use the ChatGPT image generator free alternative when you want a dedicated text-to-image path, invent the first frame in AI text-to-image, keep materials honest in AI product photography, recrop a paid frame in AI social media ads, change only crop from a locked hero in image to image, and hold a clean field in the white-background product photo tool. Do not paste a ChatGPT screenshot that still shows “Sponsored.”

What OpenAI actually announced

OpenAI’s 5 October 2026 ads post describes a visual format meant to show product inspiration, product usage, or the experience a product makes possible. Testing starts later in October 2026 in the US. TechCrunch’s same-day report matches the core rules: labeled display ads appear alongside generated images, they do not influence answers, and the first wave is US-only with a limited advertiser set. ChatGPT ads already exist on free and low-cost tiers in other placements; this test is specifically during image generation.

That is different from the earlier ChatGPT ads help page, which said ads could appear below a response and, during the February 2026 US test, would not appear after you generated an image. Do not treat that older “no ads after image generation” line as current once this visual-ad test is live in your account. Availability still varies by country, plan, and whether you are in the test.

ChatGPT Images 2.5, launched 8 September 2026, is a model update: sharper detail, more stable subjects across one-element edits, and lower latency versus Images 2.0. It is not this ad format. GPT Image 2 is the generator FreeGPTImg exposes today. Write the model on the screen into the file name. Do not stamp a GPT Image 2 file as Images 2.5, and do not stamp a ChatGPT screenshot as a product photo.

A neighboring ad is not a reference image. If ChatGPT shows a sponsored bottle next to the candle you generated, that bottle is not in your brief. Do not prompt “make it more like the ad on the right.” Do not include the ad label, a sponsored wordmark, or ChatGPT chrome in a crop you send to Amazon, Meta, or a printer.

Name the job before you generate

Weak files fail because they mix three jobs: a catalog still, a chat screenshot, and an advertiser’s visual ad. Pick one.

Job What you export Keep Change one thing Wrong move
Catalog / MAIN still Product as sold, even light, no chrome True silhouette, pack size, color Background or crop only ChatGPT UI, “Sponsored,” extra SKUs, prices
Social ad still 4:5 or 9:16 of the same SKU, empty headline band Same SKU, empty type Crop or room Screenshot of the chat, sale bursts, mascots
Poster / flyer concept Large type you drafted, empty price/date Short exact line, empty offer band Layout only Live prices, dates, QR codes, retailer logos
ChatGPT visual ad (advertiser) Product inspiration or in-use still, labeled later by the network Honest product, empty legal lines Scene or usage moment Putting the ChatGPT ad label into the artwork
Chat screenshot (not a deliverable) Nothing you ship — — Saving the whole window as the “final”

Meta’s Instagram Feed image guide currently recommends a 4:5 canvas around 1440 × 1800, JPG or PNG. Recheck the live placement before you upload. Amazon’s product-image help still wants listing MAIN to be a realistic photo of the actual product on white (RGB 255, 255, 255), filling most of the frame, without text, logos, or watermarks covering the item. A chat window with a sponsored tile fails both.

If you are the advertiser hoping to buy OpenAI’s new format, the still is still a product-honest image: inspiration, usage, or outcome. OpenAI says the network will label the ad and keep it separate from the user’s generated image. You still should not bake “Sponsored,” “ChatGPT,” or a fake UI into the pixels.

Clean generation workflow

Use the same sequence in FreeGPTImg, a GPT Image 2 tab, ChatGPT Images 2.5, or any other generator. The rule is the export, not the logo on the chat.

  1. Write five lines. SKU truth (pack size, color, material), slot (white MAIN, 4:5 feed, 9:16 story, poster), crop, empty type zones, model name on the screen.
  2. Generate in a dedicated workspace. Download the image file, not a browser screenshot. If you must work in ChatGPT during the US visual-ad test, use the image download control. Crop out labels, suggested prompts, and the neighboring ad.
  3. Lock one as-sold hero. Even light, readable silhouette, no extra products. This file can later become marketplace MAIN. Do not put feed chrome or sponsored tiles here.
  4. Write keep / change / do-not. Keep silhouette, pack size, color, and label artwork. Change only one noun: background, crop, or room. Do not add logos you do not own, barcodes, prices, ChatGPT chrome, or the SKU from the ad beside the canvas.
  5. Generate three options on the same crop. Changing 1:1 to 4:5 between option A and option B is a new job.
  6. Edit one noun. “Keep this tin. Change only the background to matte seamless white.” If the label warps, or a second bottle from the neighboring ad appears, revert.
  7. Overlay real words last. Prices, dates, URLs, “Shop now,” and legal lines never belong in the generator if they must be exact.
  8. Inspect at 100%. Check extra fingers, melted logos, fake seals, “Sponsored” fragments, and whether Content Credentials or other provenance marks are acceptable for that channel.

OpenAI’s image-generation guidance still treats precise in-image text and packed layouts as weak spots. That is why the headline stays empty even when the chat is showing a beautiful sponsored tile with perfect type.

Prompt formula

Chrome-free commercial still, not a ChatGPT screenshot and not a sponsored tile.
Model: [GPT Image 2 / ChatGPT Images 2.5 / other name on screen].
Subject: [one SKU or one original character], keep [exact color, material, silhouette, label].
Job: [catalog still / 4:5 social still / 9:16 story / poster concept / product-in-use inspiration].
Crop: [1:1 / 4:5 / 9:16 / 16:9], camera [eye-level / 3/4], lighting [soft studio / window].
Change only: [background / crop / room / empty-band layout].
Text in image: none, or the exact short line “[WORDS]” already drafted, large and correctly spelled.
Do not add: extra SKUs, prices, dates, barcodes, QR codes, “Sponsored,” chat UI, neighboring ads, celebrity faces, or logos I do not own.
Leave empty space for [headline / price / CTA] that I will add in an editor.

Prompt examples

White catalog still (download the file, not the window)

Keep this exact 12 oz matte black soy-candle tin. Change only the background to matte seamless white, RGB 255 255 255.
Do not restyle the product. Do not warp the label. No second tin. No text. No UI chrome.

4:5 social still, empty headline

Create a 4:5 social still of the same black tin on a bare oak table, even window light.
Keep the tin identical. Leave the lower third empty for a headline I will overlay.
No prices, no “Sponsored,” no extra candles, no chat panels.

Product-in-use inspiration (advertiser visual ad)

Product-in-use still of the same 12 oz black tin on a quiet evening table, one lit wick, warm lamp light.
Keep the tin identical. No people, no extra brands, no prices.
Leave a quiet lower band empty. This is inspiration, not a coupon.

Image-to-image, crop only

Image-to-image: keep this exact hoodie, size M, color, and lighting.
Recrop to 9:16 with the garment in the center third. Add only an empty lower band.
No extra garments, no platform UI, no sponsored tiles.

Review the pixels before you spend

Zoom to 100%. A phone grid hides a warped net weight and a stray “Sponsored” crop.

  • Subject honesty. Same silhouette, pack size, color, and SKU. If a stranger would think this still sells the brand in the neighboring ChatGPT ad, discard it.
  • Chrome honesty. No chat sidebar, model picker, download button, suggested follow-ups, or ad label in the pixels you ship.
  • Empty type. Prices, percents, dates, CTAs, barcodes, and retailer wordmarks stay empty of anything you need people to read.
  • People and rights. No recognizable generated faces you cannot clear. No children. No copyrighted characters. Photorealistic AI people may need a synthetic-performer tag in IPTC/XMP on some platforms; apply that in an editor.
  • Provenance. A prettier still is not a license. Downstream apps may keep, strip, or flag credentials. Match the file to the channel’s current rules.

Limitations you should not skip

FreeGPTImg is a GPT Image 2 workspace with 20 daily free credits and no credit card required. That is not a claim that ChatGPT will never show ads in your region, that FreeGPTImg will never show promotions, or that GPT Image 2 is ChatGPT Images 2.5. Match the label on the page you opened.

Do not promise Amazon, Shopify, Meta, or OpenAI Ads compliance from a prompt. Do not say the visual-ad test is live in every country. OpenAI said later this month, US, initial advertisers. If your ChatGPT account still has no tile beside the image, you are not in that test yet. Do not screenshot someone else’s sponsored creative and reuse it as your own.

Do not put live prices into the generator. Do not prompt a celebrity using the product. Do not treat OpenAI’s “ads do not influence answers” line as a reason to skip a 100% pixel check. Models still invent extra SKUs when you ask for a “set” or a “table.”

FAQ

Will ChatGPT put ads inside the image I generate?

OpenAI says no. The 5 October 2026 post states that ads remain separate from the image being created and will be clearly labeled. TechCrunch reports the same: the tile sits alongside the result. Your job is to export the image, not the tile.

When does the visual-ad test start?

OpenAI said testing begins later in October 2026 in the United States with an initial group of advertisers. It did not publish a clock-time launch in that post. Treat “later this month” as a US test window, not a global switch.

Can I keep generating in ChatGPT and crop the ad out?

You can if the download control gives you a clean image file. Do not rely on a full-window screenshot. If follow-up prompts start drifting toward the sponsored SKU, stop and lock the hero in a dedicated generator.

Does this mean I should make “ChatGPT ads” as artwork?

No. If you are a creator, you need a chrome-free still of your SKU. If you are an advertiser in OpenAI’s test, you still need a product-honest inspiration or in-use image. The network supplies the label. Baking “Sponsored” or ChatGPT chrome into the file is the wrong move either way.

Is FreeGPTImg the same as ChatGPT Images 2.5?

No. FreeGPTImg currently exposes GPT Image 2, with 20 daily free credits and no credit card required. ChatGPT Images 2.5 is OpenAI’s September 2026 ChatGPT image model. Write the name on the screen into the file. Do not relabel.

Why did a second product appear after I saw an ad?

The prompt got loose (“make it more premium,” “lifestyle table,” “like that one”), or the neighboring tile became an accidental reference. Shorten the brief. Named pack only. One noun. Generate again from the locked hero.
