AI Google Play Screenshot Prompts: 1080×1920 Sets That Pass the 2:1 Rule

A Google Play phone screenshot is a tall in-app still, not a 1024×500 feature graphic, not a 512×512 icon, and not an App Store 6.9-inch 1320×2868 file. Export JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha. Keep every side between 320 and 3840 pixels. Keep the long side no more than twice the short side. 1080×1920 is the safe default. A 1320×2868 App Store screenshot is about 2.17:1, so Play rejects it. Upload at least two screenshots per device type, up to eight. Show one real job per frame. Overlay the real UI copy in an editor.

Play’s listing assets are three different jobs. The feature graphic is one 1024×500 banner. The hi-res icon is 512×512. Screenshots are the scroll of product proof. Mixing those canvases is how listings fail upload before they fail review. Generate the screenshot set on a 9:16 portrait, then export 1080×1920. Do not squash a wide banner into a phone slot, and do not pad a square icon into a fake phone.

You can draft the scene in FreeGPTImg, generate it with GPT Image 2 or the AI text-to-image generator, keep interface ideas honest in the AI UI generator, steal a high-contrast layout from the AI poster generator, lock a simple mark in the AI logo generator, reuse a winning object in AI social media ads only after you recrop that job, or start from AI image templates.

What is an AI Google Play screenshot workflow?

An AI Google Play screenshot workflow is a prompt-and-review process for the phone (and optional tablet) stills on your store listing. You pick four to eight jobs the app actually does. You describe one job per image, a 9:16 canvas, lighting, and what must stay out. The model returns a concept. Real labels, prices, and the app name go on in an editor so you can change a line without regenerating the whole frame.

Newer models, including ChatGPT Images 2.0 and GPT Image 2, handle short UI labels better than older generators. That is not a license to invent a status bar, a fake 4.9 star row, or a screen the app does not ship. Play’s deceptive-behavior rules still require the listing, including images, to describe the product accurately. A pretty lie is still a metadata problem.

A screenshot is also not a marketing collage. One frame, one job, one focal point. If screenshot one tries to show onboarding, the home feed, three widgets, and a testimonial, none of it reads at listing width.

If you already have an App Store set, do not upload it unchanged. Apple’s 6.9-inch class accepts 1320×2868, 1290×2796, or 1260×2736. Those files are taller than Play’s 2:1 cap. Crop them to 1080×1920 or regenerate. Stretching a 1024×500 Play feature graphic the other way is worse: the hero lands in the wrong third of a phone.

Choose the screenshot job before prompting

Weak Play sets fail because every frame tries to be a trailer. Assign a job to each slot, then generate that job only.

Screenshot job Best use Canvas Prompt focus Overlay later
Home job Utilities, productivity 1080×1920 One primary screen, large type, no fake OS chrome App name or one verb
Outcome still Habit, photo, fitness 1080×1920 The finished result, not a 12-step wizard One verified outcome word
Input moment Creators, editors 1080×1920 One control the user actually touches Skip type if the control already reads
Social proof scene Marketplaces 1080×1920 A believable in-app card, not invented ratings Real numbers only, in an editor
Empty-state promise New apps 1080×1920 First useful empty screen, not a wall of badges One onboarding line
Tablet workspace Apps that ship large screens Separate tablet set One wide layout the phone set cannot show Do not reuse the phone crop

Generate at 9:16, then export 1080×1920. 1080×2340 looks like a modern phone and fails Play: 2340÷1080 is about 2.17, over the 2:1 cap. 1080×2160 is the tallest legal 2:1 file. Stay at 1080×1920 unless you have a reason to use the extra pixels.

Do not export a transparent PNG. Play screenshots must be JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha. Transparent corners become junk on the store background. Flatten to an opaque file. Use JPEG for photo-heavy games and camera apps. Use an opaque PNG when UI edges and labels still look sharp after compression.

Tablet, Chromebook, TV, Wear, and Automotive slots are separate device types. Phone files do not become tablet files by padding. If the app is phone-only, ship a strong phone set of two to eight frames and stop.

The Google Play screenshot prompt formula

Use this structure for the first batch:

Create a Google Play phone screenshot concept, not a feature graphic, not an app icon, not an App Store 6.9-inch portrait, and not a screenshot of the Play Store itself.
Surface: Google Play phone screenshot, 9:16 portrait, export target 1080×1920.
Job: [home job / outcome still / input moment / social proof scene / empty-state promise].
App promise: [one sentence the app actually does].
Audience: [who installs this].
Hero visual: [one real screen, one result, or one control].
Layout: 9:16 portrait, keep the focal point in the center 70%, keep the top 12% and bottom 12% free of the only headline, treat those bands as listing chrome and caption risk.
Style: [clean product UI / bold game still / photo-app result / utility dashboard].
Color palette: [2–4 colors from the real app, not a random neon pack].
Text handling: no readable URLs, prices, star ratings, “#1”, awards, or Play Store UI. Short empty headline band only, inside the center.
Must include: [one honest UI moment, lighting, margins that survive a narrow listing card].
Must avoid: fake device frames with invented UI, status-bar clocks, collages of tiny screens, watermarks, celebrity likenesses, transparent backgrounds, 1024×500 crops, 1320×2868 App Store files.

The two fields that matter most are “hero visual” and the 9:16 box. If you generate a square and stretch it, buttons become pills and type hits the caption. If you generate a 2:1 cinema still and crop the sides, the only noun disappears.

Play can also use listing images in ads. Design the first two frames as if they will appear without your description text. If the still needs a paragraph to make sense, it is not screenshot one.

Prompt examples you can copy

1. Habit tracker home job

Create a Google Play phone screenshot concept for a habit tracker. 9:16 portrait, export 1080×1920. Show one home screen: today’s three habits as large cards, a simple streak number, and a single add button. Keep the UI honest and uncluttered. Soft daylight, muted teal and cream, no fake iOS or Android status bar, no star ratings, no “#1 HABIT APP”. Empty headline band in the upper third. Opaque background.

2. Photo editor outcome still

Create a Google Play phone screenshot concept for a photo editor. 9:16 portrait, export 1080×1920. Show one edited portrait on a clean canvas with a short tool rail: crop, light, color. The photo is the hero. Do not invent before/after split screens, watermarks, or a 4.9 rating pill. Keep controls large enough to read at listing width. Empty caption band at the bottom. JPEG-friendly lighting, no transparency.

3. Puzzle game input moment

Create a Google Play phone screenshot concept for a match-three puzzle game. 9:16 portrait, export 1080×1920. Show one board mid-move, large tiles, one character in the top third, no HUD wall of numbers. Do not copy another studio’s characters. No Play Store chrome, no fake “EDITORS’ CHOICE” seal, no 1024×500 banner layout. Center the board. Opaque background.

4. Language-app empty-state promise

Create a Google Play phone screenshot concept for a language-learning app. 9:16 portrait, export 1080×1920. Show the first useful lesson screen: one phrase card, one speaker button, one check button. Friendly daylight, limited palette. No fake fluency scores, no celebrity tutors, no paragraph of tiny UI text. Leave a short empty band for a three-word overlay in an editor.

5. Marketplace social-proof scene

Create a Google Play phone screenshot concept for a local-services marketplace. 9:16 portrait, export 1080×1920. Show one provider card with a photo, a first name, a category, and a large message button. Do not invent star averages, review counts, or prices. Keep type large. No map pins covering the face. Opaque PNG-friendly flat background, no alpha.

Generate two to four variants per job, pick one, then move to the next slot. Repeating the same composition eight times looks like a doorway set, not a product tour.

Pre-upload checklist

  1. Confirm these files are screenshots, not the 1024×500 feature graphic and not the 512×512 icon.
  2. Export 1080×1920, or another size where every side is 320–3840 and the long side is at most 2× the short side.
  3. Reject 1080×2340 and 1320×2868. Both sit above Play’s 2:1 cap.
  4. Flatten to JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha. Inspect the file; transparent corners fail this slot.
  5. Upload at least two screenshots per device type, no more than eight.
  6. Put real UI copy in an editor. Do not trust the model to spell the app name.
  7. Check frame one at listing width. If the only subject sits in the bottom 20%, regenerate.
  8. Compare each frame to the real app. A screen that does not exist is a listing problem, not a crop problem.
  9. Keep the feature graphic on a separate 1024×500 track. Do not reuse screenshot one as the banner.
  10. If you also ship tablets, generate a tablet set. Do not letterbox the phone file.

Limitations you should expect

AI will invent extra screens, extra tabs, and extra settings. If the app does three jobs, do not generate twelve. AI will also misspell labels and draw OS chrome that is not yours. Overlay real type. Play compresses listing cards; a high-contrast center survives that better than 9-point UI baked into 1920 pixels. Rankings, prices, and “editors’ choice” seals belong nowhere in these files unless they are true and you can defend them.

GPT Image 2 and ChatGPT Images 2.0 are stronger at short embedded text than older image models. Use that for a three-word button or a single card title. Do not use it to write a settings dump, a URL, or a fake review stack.

Device frames are optional decoration, not a requirement. If you add a phone bezel, keep the UI inside it honest and still export an opaque 1080×1920 file. A frame that hides the product, or a collage of four mini-phones, wastes the only pixels the listing shows first.

FAQ

What size should Google Play phone screenshots be?

Play accepts JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha, each side between 320 and 3840 pixels, and a longest-to-shortest ratio no greater than 2:1. 1080×1920 is the practical default. It is sharp enough for the listing and stays inside the ratio cap.

How many screenshots does Play require?

At least two per device type, and up to eight. Two weak frames are worse than two clear ones. Four to six is enough for most utilities. Games can use the full eight if each frame is a different beat.

Can I reuse App Store screenshots on Google Play?

Not at 6.9-inch size. 1320×2868, 1290×2796, and 1260×2736 are taller than 2:1. Crop to 1080×1920 or regenerate on a 9:16 canvas. Also flatten alpha. Play rejects transparency on this slot.

Is a Play screenshot the same as a feature graphic?

No. The feature graphic is one required 1024×500 banner. Screenshots are the 9:16 product stills. Generate each job on its own canvas. Do not stretch one file into the other.

Can I use a transparent PNG from an image model?

No. Screenshots must be JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha. Flatten the file. Keep transparency for the 512×512 app icon, which is a different asset.

Should the AI write my app name on the screenshot?

Usually no. Generate the UI moment and an empty caption band. Put two to five verified words in an editor, or let the in-app type that already exists carry the frame. Invented headlines and fake ratings are review risk.
