Convert a Photo to Digital Art Without Losing the Face
Turn a photo into digital art while keeping the person recognizable. One-style restyle, prompt formula, review checklist, and a free GPT Image 2 workflow.

An AI photo-to-digital-art converter works when you upload a real photo, name one art medium, and lock the face. Google Photos now lets you restyle a still with Nano Banana by describing a new look in the editor. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 on September 8, 2026, and said it is better at keeping people from reference photos. The same rule already works on GPT Image 2: change the medium, not the identity. Review likeness, hands, and rights before you publish.
Start from a still you already trust. Draft in FreeGPTImg, open the photo to digital art converter, keep the GPT Image 2 loop on GPT Image 2, upload the same file in image to image if you need a tighter restyle, invent a new scene only in the AI text-to-image generator, browse more looks in AI image templates, recrop a finished piece in AI social media ads, or enlarge a poster version in the AI poster generator.
What photo-to-digital-art actually does
Photo-to-digital-art is a restyle job, not a new portrait from text. You give the model a photograph plus one medium: oil, watercolor, comic ink, pixel art, or a poster illustration. The photograph is the person, pet, or object. The medium is the only thing that should move.
Text-to-image invents a face. Catalog image-to-image keeps a product and changes background or light. Digital-art conversion sits between those jobs. The subject must stay recognizable in three seconds. If a stranger cannot match the output to the photo, the restyle failed even if the paint looks expensive.
Google’s Photos editor now exposes that job as a Nano Banana restyle: open a photo, tap Help me edit, and describe a style such as a Renaissance portrait, a tile mosaic, or a children’s-book page. Google Pics, rolling out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, uses the same Nano Banana family for posters, social posts, and object-level edits. FreeGPTImg remains a GPT Image 2 workspace: 20 daily free credits, no credit card required. Use the model in front of you. Do not relabel a GPT Image 2 file as Nano Banana or Images 2.5.
Pick one medium before you upload
Weak restyles fail because they ask for oil paint, a new haircut, a new city, and a slogan at once. Name the slot first.
| Job | Start from | Change one thing | Keep | Wrong move |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Painted portrait | A sharp, front-lit photo | Oil, gouache, or watercolor medium | Face, age, hairline, glasses | Aging the person or swapping eye color |
| Stylized profile avatar | A head-and-shoulders crop | Flat illustration or comic ink | Likeness and wardrobe color | A new identity that only shares a hair color |
| Pet or mascot print | A clear animal photo | Storybook or screen-print look | Markings, ear shape, collar | Inventing a second pet |
| Product as art print | A real product photo | Poster illustration or risograph | Silhouette, label art, color | Rewriting the logo or inventing a SKU |
| Event poster from a photo | An approved group still | One poster medium and empty type band | Faces and outfit colors | Letting the model write the date and venue |
A restyle is not a marketplace MAIN image. Amazon still wants a realistic photo of the actual product for most categories. A painted bottle is a print or a secondary slot, not a white-background listing hero. Overlay real words in an editor. Dates, prices, and URLs never belong in the generator if they must be exact.
One-medium restyle workflow
Use the same sequence in the photo-to-digital-art template, a GPT Image 2 image-to-image tab, Google Photos restyle, or ChatGPT Images 2.5.
- Start from a file you would show someone. Even light, sharp eyes, no heavy filter. A dark selfie with a tiny face will not survive paint.
- Crop first. Head-and-shoulders for a portrait. Full body only if the outfit is the point. Do not ask the model to zoom and restyle in one pass.
- Name one medium. “Watercolor on cold-press paper.” Not “make it artistic, cinematic, and viral.”
- Write keep / change / do-not. Three short lines. If a line is missing, the model will invent a younger face or a new background.
- Keep the crop. Generate three options at the same aspect ratio. A new ratio is a new job.
- Inspect the keep-list first. If the glasses vanished, the mole moved, or the smile changed, stop. Go back to the better base. Do not stack a second style on a broken likeness.
- Overlay real words later. Event titles, usernames, and prices go in a design tool. Leave an empty band if you need type.
- Export for the real slot. Recrop a square avatar, a 4:5 print, or a 9:16 story in the matching tool instead of stretching paint.
OpenAI’s Images 2.5 notes are useful even if you never open ChatGPT: keep the subject from the reference, edit one element, and expect earlier edits to survive later turns. That is a restyle rule, not a license to run ten styles on one face until it drifts.
Prompt formula
Photo-to-digital-art restyle, not a new person and not a collage.
Reference: the uploaded photo is the only source of truth for [face / pet / product].
Keep: [age, face shape, hairline, glasses, markings, label art]. Do not beautify. Do not change [eye color / teeth / logo].
Change only: the medium to [oil on linen / watercolor / comic ink / pixel art / screen-print poster].
Background: [keep the room as painted shapes / simple studio wash in the same colors].
Camera: match the original crop and eye level.
Text in image: none, or leave an empty band at [top / bottom].
Do not add: extra people, jewelry that is not in the photo, watermarks, signatures that are not mine.
Prompt examples
Oil portrait. “Keep this person exactly, including glasses, hairline, and the navy sweater. Change only the medium to oil on linen with visible brush marks. Keep the same crop and eye level. Do not rejuvenate the face. No extra jewelry.”
Watercolor headshot. “Keep this face, age, and freckles. Change only the medium to watercolor on cold-press paper, soft edges, paper white in the highlights. Background becomes a simple wash. Do not add a hat.”
Comic avatar. “Keep this likeness and the red jacket. Change only the medium to clean comic ink with flat color, two-pixel outline. Square crop. No speech bubbles. No invented logo on the chest.”
Pet print. “Keep this dog’s face, ear notch, and collar tag shape. Change only the medium to a children’s-book gouache illustration. Simple studio background. Do not add a second dog or human hands.”
Product art print. “Keep this bottle silhouette, glass color, and label artwork. Change only the medium to a risograph poster illustration. Leave the top 20% empty for a title I will add later. Do not rewrite the label.”
If the first batch moves the keep-list, shorten the prompt. One medium. Then retry. Free retry exists on FreeGPTImg when a generation misses. Use it on the same brief, not a new fantasy face.
Review the pixels before you reuse the file
Zoom to 100%. Thumbnails hide identity drift.
- Identity. Same face, age, and glasses. If you cannot match it in three seconds, discard it.
- Hands and hair. Extra fingers, melted curls, and earrings that teleport fail prints and avatars.
- Type and marks. Tattoos, moles, collar tags, and product labels stay readable or they come off in an editor.
- Medium honesty. Oil should look like oil. A plastic skin with a painterly filter is not a restyle.
- Provenance and rights. OpenAI still uses C2PA metadata and an invisible watermark on GPT Image outputs. Google publishes SynthID and Content Credential checks on more surfaces. Downstream apps may keep, strip, or flag that data. You also need rights to the photo and consent for the likeness. A prettier painting is not a license.
Limitations you should not skip
A restyle is not a studio sitting and not a rights clearance. Do not upload a photo of someone who did not agree to be painted. Do not use a celebrity, a copyrighted character, or a brand mascot as the style reference. If a platform requires AI disclosure, follow that policy.
ChatGPT Images 2.5 is not GPT Image 2. Nano Banana in Google Photos is not the FreeGPTImg default. Google Pics is a Workspace product for Pro and Ultra subscribers; it is not a FreeGPTImg feature. On FreeGPTImg you are in a GPT Image 2 loop with the photo-to-digital-art template. Write the model you used into the file name.
Better subject preservation is not infinite restyle. If turn three rewrites a jawline, revert. Do not stack adjectives. Do not ask for photorealistic “better” skin when the job is paint. If you need a catalog white background, that is a different tool and a different brief.
FAQ
What is an AI photo to digital art converter?
It is a tool that takes an uploaded photo plus one art medium and returns a restyled still. The photo is the subject. The medium is oil, ink, watercolor, or another named look. FreeGPTImg includes a photo-to-digital-art template on GPT Image 2, with 20 daily free credits and no credit card required.
How is this different from image-to-image product editing?
Product image-to-image keeps a SKU and changes background, light, or crop. Photo-to-digital-art keeps a face, pet, or object and changes the medium. Both fail when you ask for several changes at once. If the job is a white-background listing photo, do not paint it.
Did Google Photos and ChatGPT Images 2.5 change this workflow?
They made the same workflow more visible. Google Photos now restyles a still with Nano Banana from a short style request. On September 8, 2026, OpenAI said Images 2.5 is better at preserving people from reference photos. The creator rule did not change: one medium, lock the face, then review.
Can I use a painted photo as a profile picture or print?
Yes if the likeness still matches and you have rights to the original photo. Check the platform’s avatar rules and any AI-labeling policy. For prints, inspect hands, hair, and text at 100% before you order. Overlay names and dates in an editor.
Why did the face change even though I uploaded the photo?
The prompt asked for beauty, youth, a new hairstyle, or a second style on top of the first. Shorten it. Name what must not move. Generate three options on the same crop. If the keep-list still drifts, the face is too small, too dark, or turned away from the camera.
Should I restyle every photo after a new image model ships?
No. Restyle when you have a real job: a profile avatar, a poster, a gift print, or a social crop. Keep files that already look like the person. A new model name is not a reason to throw away a working portrait.

Restyle one photo on FreeGPTImg
Upload one photo. Name one medium. Keep the face. Open FreeGPTImg, run the restyle in the photo to digital art converter, stay on GPT Image 2 when that is the model in front of you, and send a finished still to AI social media ads or the AI poster generator only after the likeness still matches the reference.
