Nano Banana Pro vs Nano Banana 2 After the Original Nano Banana Retirement

Original Nano Banana is Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Adobe’s generative-model retirement list, updated September 10, 2026, marks Gemini 2.5 Flash Image / Nano Banana as deprecated in Adobe apps that day. Google’s own deprecation window for Gemini 2.5 with Nano Banana starts October 2, 2026. The replacements to name correctly are Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) for complex product and layout work, and Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) for faster everyday drafts. Pick the model from the job. Review labels, faces, and rights before you publish.

A retired dropdown is not a new brief. One subject, one crop, one honest claim still wins. You can draft in FreeGPTImg, open the Nano Banana Pro image generator or Nano Banana 2, keep a GPT Image 2 loop on GPT Image 2, upload a reference in image to image, keep materials honest in AI product photography, or recrop a winner in AI social media ads.

Name the three Nano Banana models before you generate

Do not treat “Nano Banana” as one model. Google’s image-generation docs split the family. Adobe’s partner-model help page, also updated September 10, 2026, lists Gemini 3 (with Nano Banana Pro) and Gemini 3.1 (with Nano Banana 2) for Firefly text-to-image, Prompt to Edit Image, and Boards. The original Gemini 2.5 Flash Image name is the one leaving Adobe surfaces.

Name you will see Official model Best job Speed / control Do not treat it as
Original Nano Banana Gemini 2.5 Flash Image Legacy files you already reviewed Fast, 1024px-class drafts The current Adobe default after September 10, 2026
Nano Banana 2 Gemini 3.1 Flash Image High-volume variants, social drafts, quick edits Google’s go-to for most new image jobs A 4K campaign still you have not inspected
Nano Banana Pro Gemini 3 Pro Image Complex layouts, product mockups, text-heavy graphics, tighter edits Slower reasoning pass; Google lists 1K/2K/4K and Search grounding on the model card A Firefly-trained Adobe model, or a listing photo you have not reviewed
GPT Image 2 OpenAI GPT Image 2 Existing GPT Image 2 briefs you do not want to relabel Known GPT Image 2 loop “Generated with Nano Banana Pro”

Google’s image-generation guide says Gemini 3.1 Flash Image (Nano Banana 2) should be the default for most new work. Gemini 3 Pro Image (Nano Banana Pro) is for professional assets and complex instructions, with a thinking pass and up to 4K on Google’s API. Gemini 2.5 Flash Image remains the older high-velocity model. Write the name you actually used into the file name. Relabeling a 2.5 file as Pro is a lie.

Adobe is not Google. Partner models are not Adobe models. Availability can vary by country, plan, and app.

What changed on September 10, 2026

Adobe’s retirement table lists Gemini 2.5 (Flash-Image / Nano Banana, Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro) as deprecated on September 10, 2026. The footnote is the date that matters for creators: Google is deprecating Gemini 2.5 with Nano Banana starting October 2, 2026, and Adobe apps begin removing service on September 10. If a Firefly, Photoshop, Express, or Illustrator dropdown still shows the old name today, treat it as leftover inventory, not a promise it will stay.

Adobe’s current Firefly inventory for this family is Gemini 3 (Nano Banana Pro) and Gemini 3.1 (Nano Banana 2). Firefly’s partner-model page puts Pro on text-to-image, Prompt to Edit Image, Boards, Graph, Photoshop Generative Fill, and several Illustrator vector flows. Nano Banana 2 sits on text-to-image, Prompt to Edit Image, and Boards. Mobile Firefly help, updated the same day, tells you to pick those two names from Partner models.

Google Cloud marked Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro generally available on May 28, 2026. That GA note is not the September retirement. The September change is the old 2.5 Flash Image leaving Adobe apps. Do not regenerate a working catalog shot just because a dropdown moved. Regen when the file fails the job: warped label, wrong crop, or an edit that will not hold.

Pick the model from the job

Write the job in one sentence before you touch a model menu.

  1. Catalog still. One SKU, one angle, empty label panel if type must be exact. Prefer Nano Banana Pro when the layout is dense. Prefer GPT Image 2 if that is the generator in front of you and the brief already lives there.
  2. Social ad still. Same object, new crop, empty headline band. Prefer Nano Banana 2 for many variants. Recrop later. Do not stretch a 1:1 catalog shot into 4:5.
  3. Reference edit. Keep the bottle, the face, or the mascot. Change only background, light, or wardrobe. One noun per edit. Nano Banana Pro is the tighter edit model in this family. Image-to-image is the right tab, not a second text-only roll of the dice.
  4. Text-in-image concept. Short headline, large type, empty price/date fields. Pro is the better bet for posters, flyers, and infographic objects. Overlay real prices in an editor. Invented SKUs fail review.
  5. Fast mood board. Many looks, same subject. Nano Banana 2. Lock the subject first. Style second. If style eats the product, discard the file.

If the surface in front of you is ChatGPT Images 2.5, you are not in the Nano Banana family. If the surface is Firefly, pick the partner-model name and write it down. If the surface is FreeGPTImg, use the Nano Banana Pro or Nano Banana 2 page you actually opened, or stay on GPT Image 2.

Creator workflow after the 2.5 name leaves the menu

Use the same sequence in Gemini, Firefly, or a FreeGPTImg workspace.

  1. Name the slot. Amazon-style main image, 4:5 ad, 9:16 story, 2:3 poster, or cutout asset. One slot.
  2. Name the model. Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2, original Nano Banana (legacy only), or GPT Image 2. Put it in the file name.
  3. Lock the brief. Subject, crop, background, lighting, what must not move, what type stays empty.
  4. Generate three options on the same crop. Changing aspect ratio between option A and option B is a new job.
  5. Edit one noun. “Keep the bottle. Change only the background to matte seamless white.” If the label warps, stop. Go back to the better base.
  6. Overlay real words in an editor. Prices, dates, URLs, and legal lines never belong in the generator if they must be exact.
  7. Export for the real slot. Flatten when the destination hates transparency. Recrop in the matching tool instead of stretching.
  8. Review the pixels. Zoom to 100%. Check extra fingers, melted logos, fake seals, and whether provenance metadata is acceptable for that channel.

Prompt formula

Create a [catalog still / social ad still / poster concept / reference edit], not a collage and not a store screenshot.
Model: [Nano Banana Pro / Nano Banana 2 / GPT Image 2].
Subject: [one object or one original character], keep [exact color, material, silhouette].
Crop: [1:1 / 4:5 / 9:16 / 16:9], camera [eye-level / 3/4], lighting [soft studio / window / overcast].
Background: [matte seamless white / set, no extra props].
Text in image: either none, or the exact short line “[WORDS]” in [location], large and correctly spelled.
Do not change [label artwork / face / logo shape].
Do not invent prices, dates, certifications, or brand names I did not supply.
Leave empty space for [headline / price / CTA] that I will add in an editor.

Prompt examples

White-background catalog still (Nano Banana Pro or GPT Image 2)

Create a catalog still, not a lifestyle scene.
One matte black 12oz water bottle, centered, 3/4 view, eye-level.
Matte seamless white background, soft studio lighting, honest metal and plastic, no extra props.
No text in the image. No invented logo. No droplets unless they already exist on the product.
Keep the silhouette true. Empty the label panel if type must be exact later.

4:5 ad still with empty headline band (Nano Banana 2)

Create a 4:5 social ad still of the same black water bottle on a kitchen counter.
Keep the bottle identical. Change only the setting.
Leave the top third empty for a headline I will overlay.
No prices, no URLs, no fake badges.

One-noun reference edit

Keep this bottle. Change only the background to matte seamless white.
Do not restyle the product. Do not warp the label. Do not add reflections that were not there.

Recrop an approved still in white-background product photo or AI poster generator instead of asking the model to invent a new layout and a new object at the same time.

Review checklist

  • The file name includes the real model: Pro, 2, original 2.5, or GPT Image 2.
  • The crop matches the slot. You did not stretch 1:1 into 9:16.
  • The subject survived the edit. Label, face, and silhouette still match the brief.
  • In-image type is short, spelled correctly, or absent. Real prices live in the editor.
  • No fake seals, stars, “Amazon’s Choice,” or invented certifications.
  • Transparency is intentional. Marketplace main images are usually opaque.
  • You read the current listing, ads, and partner-model terms for that channel. A prompt is not a compliance stamp.

Google’s Nano Banana Pro card still warns that small faces, spelling, and fine detail can fail. DeepMind’s Gemini 3 Pro Image page says the same. Treat every text-in-image file as a draft until you zoom in.

Limitations

FreeGPTImg continues to offer GPT Image 2 generations with 20 daily free credits and no credit card required. It also exposes Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2 generator pages. That is not a claim that every Google API feature — 4K, Search grounding, or Firefly Boards — is the on-site default. Match the model name to the tool you actually used.

Do not assume Adobe’s own-model commercial terms, indemnification, or Content Credentials behavior cover a Google partner-model file. Adobe says you decide whether a partner model fits the project.

Do not promise Amazon, Shopify, or Meta compliance from a prompt. Generate the still. Read the current rules. Overlay only claims you can stand behind.

Do not confuse Gemini 3.8 Flash, a separate Gemini language model, with this image family. The image names that matter here are Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, and Gemini 3 Pro Image.

FAQ

What is original Nano Banana versus Nano Banana Pro versus Nano Banana 2?

Original Nano Banana is Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Nano Banana 2 is Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. Nano Banana Pro is Gemini 3 Pro Image. Google’s image-generation docs recommend Nano Banana 2 for most new jobs and Nano Banana Pro for complex professional assets.

Did Adobe already remove original Nano Banana?

Adobe’s retirement list, updated September 10, 2026, marks Gemini 2.5 Flash Image / Nano Banana as deprecated in Adobe apps that day. Google’s deprecation for Gemini 2.5 with Nano Banana starts October 2, 2026. If you still see the old name, treat it as leftover, not a long-term default.

Should I use Nano Banana Pro or Nano Banana 2?

Use Nano Banana 2 when you need many variants fast. Use Nano Banana Pro when the still must hold a dense layout, readable type, a product silhouette, or a tight one-noun edit. Write the name into the file so nobody relabels it later.

Is Nano Banana Pro the same as GPT Image 2?

No. Nano Banana Pro is Google’s Gemini 3 Pro Image. GPT Image 2 is OpenAI’s image model. Use the generator in front of you. Do not stamp a GPT Image 2 file as Nano Banana Pro, or the reverse.

Should I regenerate every Gemini 2.5 Flash Image asset today?

No. Keep files that already passed review. Regen when the old file fails a real job. A retirement date is not a reason to throw away a working catalog shot.

Do Firefly partner-model terms cover Nano Banana Pro?

Not automatically. Adobe says partner models are not developed by Adobe. Read the current partner-model help page and your plan terms before you send a file to a client, a store, or an ad account.
