ChatGPT Images 2.5: Flare vs Sunburst Workflow for Product Photos, Ads, and Posters

ChatGPT Images 2.5 launched on September 8, 2026. OpenAI says it is sharper, faster, and better at keeping people and products from reference photos while you edit. ChatGPT users get one Images 2.5 experience. API users pick GPT-Image-2.5 Flare for speed or GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst for tighter product and campaign stills. Sketch and templates live in ChatGPT. Review lighting, text, and rights before you publish.

A new model is not a new brief. The job is still one subject, one crop, and one honest claim. You can draft in FreeGPTImg, generate with GPT Image 2 or the AI text-to-image generator, keep materials honest in AI product photography, recrop a winning still in AI social media ads, borrow a high-contrast layout from the AI poster generator, start from AI image templates, or keep a dedicated ChatGPT-style loop on the ChatGPT image generator free alternative.

What launched on September 8, 2026

OpenAI shipped ChatGPT Images 2.5 as the ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex image experience. The same day it shipped two API models: GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst. Do not treat those three names as one button. ChatGPT extras such as Sketch and templates are product features. Flare and Sunburst are API choices.

Fact Detail
Consumer name ChatGPT Images 2.5
API names GPT-Image-2.5 Flare, GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst
Date September 8, 2026
Latency claim Up to 50% lower than Images 2.0; Flare is the fast API default vs GPT-Image-2
Fidelity claim More natural lighting, richer textures, better subject preservation from reference photos
Editing claim More reliable multi-turn edits; comment-based edits in ChatGPT
ChatGPT extras Sketch via @Sketch, templates such as Poster and Merch, shareable prompts
Availability All ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex tiers on desktop, mobile, and web
Provenance C2PA metadata and invisible watermarking

OpenAI also says people create more than 3 billion images a week across ChatGPT Images and GPT-Image models in the API. That number is volume, not quality. A listing photo, an ad still, and a poster still fail for the same old reasons: mixed crops, invented labels, and edits that change the product.

Flare vs Sunburst vs GPT Image 2

Pick the surface from the job, not from the launch headline.

Surface Best job Speed Prompt focus Do not use it for
ChatGPT Images 2.5 Conversational edits, Sketch layouts, template starts Faster than Images 2.0 One change per turn, keep the same reference Shipping a file you have not cropped or reviewed
GPT-Image-2.5 Flare Social drafts, variants, high-volume tests Default API choice; 50% lower latency than GPT-Image-2 Short locked brief, many options, same crop Final campaign stills that need extra control
GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst Product stills, campaign creative, polish passes Slower, tighter control One product, one background, one edit Rapid mood boards where speed beats fidelity
GPT Image 2 Free daily drafts, product photos, ads, posters outside ChatGPT Existing GPT Image 2 loop Same brief structure as above Claiming the file was made with Images 2.5

Flare is the default for most API apps. OpenAI positions it for creator and social content, product experiences, visual search, prototyping, and high-volume generation. Sunburst is the slower model for production-ready campaign creative and polished product imagery. If you are in ChatGPT, you do not pick those names. You get Images 2.5 and you still write a locked brief.

GPT Image 2 is not retired. If a workspace still runs GPT Image 2, keep using it for drafts you can retry, recrop, and overlay. Do not write “generated with Images 2.5” on a GPT Image 2 file.

What to change in the prompt, not the hype

Images 2.5 is better at leaving the rest of the picture alone when you ask for one change. That only helps if the first prompt was specific. Vague “make it more premium” still drifts.

Lock these fields before you generate:

  1. Job. Product still, ad still, poster concept, or layout sketch. One job.
  2. Subject. The real object or person. No extra props unless they exist.
  3. Crop. 1:1, 4:5, 9:16, or 16:9. Write the crop in the prompt.
  4. Reference rule. Keep the product shape, label area, and materials. Name what must not move.
  5. Text rule. Empty headline band. Real words go on later.
  6. Edit rule. One change per turn: background, or lighting, or angle. Not all three.

Sketch is useful when words fail. In ChatGPT, type @Sketch, draw the room, shelf, or poster blocks, then describe style and what must stay out. Sketch is a ChatGPT feature. It is not a replacement for a product photo of the real SKU.

Templates such as Poster and Merch are starting points. They do not make the date, price, or brand mark correct. Generate the scene. Type the real copy in an editor.

Creator workflow for product photos, ads, and posters

Use this sequence whether you are in ChatGPT Images 2.5 or a GPT Image 2 workspace.

  1. Write the job in one sentence. “White-background bottle, front label empty, no condensation.” If the sentence has two products or two crops, split it.
  2. Choose the surface. ChatGPT 2.5 for Sketch and multi-turn edits. Flare for many social variants. Sunburst for a listing hero you will keep. GPT Image 2 when you want a free daily loop for the same brief.
  3. Generate three options on the same crop. Do not change aspect ratio between option A and option B.
  4. Edit one noun. “Keep the bottle. Change only the background to matte seamless white.” If the label warps, discard the edit and start from the better base.
  5. Overlay real type. Prices, URLs, star ratings, and legal lines never belong in the generator prompt if they must be exact.
  6. Export for the real slot. A 4:5 ad is not an Amazon main image. A poster is not a story. Recrop in the matching tool instead of stretching.
  7. Review the file, not the chat. Zoom to 100%. Check extra fingers, melted logos, fake certifications, and C2PA or watermark expectations for the channel you are posting to.

Prompt formula

Create a [product still / social ad still / poster concept], not a collage, not a store screenshot, and not a lifestyle scene unless specified.
Crop: [1:1 / 4:5 / 9:16 / 16:9].
Subject: [one real product or one scene].
Materials: [accurate finish, color, and shape].
Background: [seamless white / real-use surface / empty poster field].
Lighting: [soft studio / window side light / even catalog light].
Reference rule: preserve [product silhouette, label panel, handle, stitch line]. Do not add [extra SKUs, badges, hands, invented packaging].
Text handling: leave a clean empty band for [headline / price / date]. No readable URLs, ratings, or logos.
Edit mode if this is a follow-up: change only [background / angle / shadow]. Keep everything else.
Must avoid: warped labels, fake certifications, celebrity likenesses, transparent corners unless the file is a cutout asset.

The two fields that matter most after the launch are “reference rule” and “edit mode.” Images 2.5 is stronger when you tell it what not to touch.

Prompt examples you can copy

1. Catalog product still

Create a catalog product still, not a lifestyle ad.
Crop: 1:1.
Subject: one matte stainless water bottle, lid closed, no condensation, no condensation drops, front label panel empty.
Background: seamless white, faint contact shadow only.
Lighting: even catalog light, no colored gels.
Reference rule: keep the bottle silhouette and lid thread. Do not add extra bottles, ice, gym equipment, or logos.
Text handling: no type.

Use this when the file must stay a product photo. Generate in ChatGPT Images 2.5 or GPT Image 2, then keep the materials honest in AI product photography or the white-background product photo tool.

2. Social ad still with empty type band

Create a 4:5 social ad still, not a poster and not a marketplace main image.
Crop: 4:5.
Subject: the same water bottle on a kitchen counter, one bottle only.
Hero: bottle in the lower third, large empty band in the upper third for a two-word overlay later.
Lighting: window side light, realistic wood grain, no luxury marble unless the real set is marble.
Text handling: empty headline band, no price, no URL, no “50% off”.
Must avoid: fake app UI, invented reviews, extra products.

Recrop the winner in AI social media ads. Do not stretch the 1:1 catalog shot.

3. Poster concept after a Sketch pass

If you sketched blocks in ChatGPT, still write the type rule:

Create a portrait poster concept from this layout sketch.
Crop: 2:3.
Hero: one object from the sketch, large, centered in the lower 60%.
Keep the top 25% as an empty headline band and the bottom 12% clear of the only focal object.
Style: bold flat shapes, two colors plus off-white.
Text handling: no readable event name, date, or venue. Those go on in an editor.
Must avoid: fake barcodes, tiny collage panels, watermarks.

Finish the layout in the AI poster generator or AI image templates if you need a second crop.

Limitations you should not skip

Images 2.5 does not remove review. OpenAI still runs prompt and image checks, and it still writes C2PA metadata plus an invisible watermark. Downstream platforms may treat that metadata differently. Check the channel before you call the file “clean.”

Sketch does not prove the product exists. A drawn bottle is a layout. A listing image still needs the real SKU, the real label, and a human check.

Better multi-turn editing is not infinite editing. If turn four warps the label, go back to turn two. Do not keep stacking adjectives.

FreeGPTImg continues to offer GPT Image 2 generations with 20 daily free credits and no credit card required. That is a GPT Image 2 workspace, not a claim that Images 2.5 is already the on-site default. Match the model name to the tool you actually used.

Do not promise Amazon, Shopify, or ad-network compliance from a prompt. Generate the still. Read the current listing or ads policy. Overlay only claims you can stand behind.

FAQ

What is ChatGPT Images 2.5?

ChatGPT Images 2.5 is OpenAI’s September 8, 2026 image model inside ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. OpenAI describes sharper details, more natural lighting, better reference-subject preservation, more reliable multi-turn edits, and up to 50% lower latency than Images 2.0.

What is the difference between Flare and Sunburst?

Both are GPT-Image-2.5 API models. Flare is the default: higher quality than GPT-Image-2 at 50% lower latency, aimed at social content, prototypes, and high-volume generation. Sunburst is slower and built for tighter control on campaign creative and polished product imagery. ChatGPT users get Images 2.5 rather than a Flare/Sunburst toggle.

Is GPT Image 2 gone?

No. GPT Image 2 remains a separate model and a valid draft loop. Use Images 2.5 where you have it. Use GPT Image 2 where that is the generator in front of you. Do not relabel old files.

Does @Sketch work in every image tool?

No. Sketch is a ChatGPT feature. Type @Sketch there to draw a layout reference. Other generators still need a written crop, subject, and exclusion list.

Can I publish Images 2.5 files without overlaying text?

Only if the image does not need exact words. Prices, dates, legal lines, and brand names should be added in an editor. Generators still invent or warp type.

Should I regenerate every GPT Image 2 asset today?

No. Regen when the old file fails a real job: warped label, wrong crop, or an edit that would not hold. Keep files that already passed review. A launch day is not a reason to throw away a working catalog shot.
