AI Instagram Story Generator: Prompts That Survive the 9:16 Safe Zone
Create AI Instagram Stories at 1080×1920 with prompt formulas, empty type bands, Meta safe-zone margins, and a pre-post review checklist.

An AI Instagram Story is a 9:16 full-screen still, not a cropped Feed post. Generate 1080×1920 (or 1440×2560 for paid Stories). Put one subject in the middle third. Leave the top ~14% and the bottom ~35% empty so the username, progress bar, reply field, and ad CTA cannot cover the only important thing. Overlay three words or fewer in an editor. Do not bake in fake swipe-up buttons, follower counts, or a price the product does not have.
Stories last a few seconds. Viewers hold a phone upright. Meta’s Stories ads help page still recommends 1080×1920, a 9:16 ratio, JPG or PNG, a 30 MB photo cap, and a five-second default hold for stills. The Ads Guide also lists 1440×2560 and asks you to keep roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom, and 6% of each side free of logos and key type. If the product sits in a corner, the UI eats it.
You can draft the scene in FreeGPTImg, generate it with GPT Image 2 or the AI text-to-image generator, keep a product honest in AI product photography, stage a real-use moment with the lifestyle product photo generator, borrow a high-contrast layout from the AI poster generator, adapt a winning crop into a social media ad, or start from AI image templates.
What is an AI Instagram Story workflow?
An AI Instagram Story workflow is a prompt-and-review process for the full-screen vertical image you post organically or run as a Stories ad. You describe one job (drop, how-to, product proof, countdown, behind-the-scenes), one hero, the 9:16 crop, lighting, and what must stay out. The model returns a concept. Typesetting the real three-word label, sticker, poll, or link happens in Instagram or an editor so you can change the offer without regenerating the picture.
Newer models, including ChatGPT Images 2.0 and GPT Image 2, handle short, high-contrast labels better than older generators. That is not a reason to stamp “50% OFF UNTIL MIDNIGHT” into the pixels. Offer text that invents a discount, a date, or a stock count is a policy risk and a trust problem. Empty bands plus real overlay type are safer.
A Story is also not a Reel cover, a 4:5 Feed ad, or a 16:9 YouTube thumbnail. Feed ads live in a shorter portrait tile. Thumbnails sit next to other videos. A Story fills the phone, then Instagram draws chrome on top of it. Design for the chrome.
Choose the Story job before prompting
Weak Stories fail because they try to be a poster, a collage, and a landing page at once. Pick the job.
| Story job | Best use | Canvas | Prompt focus | Overlay later |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product hero | Drops, restocks, one SKU | 1080×1920 | One product filling the middle third, simple backdrop | 2–3 words, no fake price |
| Lifestyle still | How it lives on a desk, shelf, or bag | 1080×1920 | One honest use scene, product readable at arm’s length | Short scene word if needed |
| How-to frame | Tutorials, recipes, unboxings | 1080×1920 | One step, one object, huge empty type band | Step number in the editor |
| Countdown / drop | Holiday and launch Stories | 1080×1920 | Product plus empty date band | Real date after you check the calendar |
| Behind the scenes | Studio, packing, making | 1080×1920 | One real-looking workspace, no fake staff portraits | “Packing today” only if true |
| Highlight cover | Profile highlight icon | 1080×1920 | Centered subject, extra margin for the circle crop | Icon label in Instagram |
Meta’s Stories ads page recommends 1080×1920 and accepts JPG or PNG up to 30 MB. Stills hold about five seconds unless the viewer skips. The Ads Guide’s stricter ad canvas is 1440×2560 at 9:16. Export the larger file for paid placement if you have it; keep the same safe-zone logic either way.
U.S. Labor Day in 2026 falls on Monday, September 7. If you are posting a sale Story this week, generate the product scene now and type the real date range after legal and inventory sign-off. Do not let the model invent “Mon–Mon” or a percentage.
The Instagram Story prompt formula
Use this structure for the first batch:
Create an Instagram Story concept, not a Feed post, not a YouTube thumbnail, and not a screenshot of the Instagram app.
Job: [product hero / lifestyle still / how-to frame / countdown / behind the scenes].
Offer idea: [one sentence the Story actually delivers].
Audience: [shoppers / students / home cooks / local visitors].
Hero visual: [one product, original character, or single scene].
Layout: 1080×1920 portrait 9:16, subject in the middle third, keep the top 14% and bottom 35% empty, keep 6% clear on left and right.
Style: [clean product photo / bright kitchen / quiet desk / packing table].
Color palette: [2–4 saturated colors that survive phone glare].
Text handling: no readable prices, dates, URLs, swipe-up buttons, or Instagram UI. Short empty headline band only, inside the center safe zone.
Must include: [hero, lighting, empty type band, margins that still read at phone size].
Must avoid: collages, tiny body copy, fake stickers, celebrity likenesses, watermarks, copied app chrome.
The two fields that matter most are “layout” and “offer idea.” If the Story is a restock, do not generate a crowded market stall. If the headline sits in the bottom third, the reply bar and the ad CTA will cover it.
Prompt examples you can copy
1. Product drop hero
Create an Instagram Story concept for a ceramic mug restock. Audience: people who drink coffee at a small desk. Hero visual: one matte sage mug on pale oak, steam suggested, no hands, no extra mugs. Layout: 1080×1920 portrait 9:16, mug large in the middle third, empty type band in the upper-middle (not the top 14%), keep the bottom 35% empty. Style: clean daylight product photography, high contrast, not luxury-ad gloss. Color palette: sage, oak, cream, charcoal. Text handling: no readable words, prices, or logos. Avoid Instagram UI, swipe arrows, and collage grids.
Use this when the Story exists to show one object. Keep the SKU honest if you later swap in a real product photo.
2. Lifestyle still
Create an Instagram Story concept for a canvas tote used on a commute. Audience: people walking to a train. Hero visual: one undyed canvas tote on a wooden bench, a closed paperback beside it, no people, no station logos. Layout: 1080×1920, tote in the center third, empty type band above the tote but below the top 14%, keep the bottom 35% clear. Style: overcast outdoor still, natural, not a fashion campaign. Color palette: canvas, wood, slate, paper. Text handling: no city names, prices, or brand wordmarks. Avoid extra bags and fake maps.
Lifestyle sells context. It should not invent a second product that is not in the cart.
3. How-to frame
Create an Instagram Story concept for step one of packing a lunch box. Audience: parents packing in the morning. Hero visual: one open stainless lunch box on a white counter, one apple and a folded napkin, no people. Layout: 1080×1920, lunch box centered, large empty number band in the upper-middle safe zone, bottom 35% empty. Style: bright kitchen still, tidy, not a recipe collage. Color palette: steel, apple red, napkin white, counter gray. Text handling: no ingredient lists or calorie numbers. Avoid extra appliances.
Put “1 / 3” in the editor. The model will invent a fourth garnish if you ask it to letter the whole recipe.
4. Labor Day weekend drop
Create an Instagram Story concept for a small-shop long-weekend restock. Audience: people planning a cookout. Hero visual: one enamel serving tray with a folded linen, outdoor table edge, late-afternoon light, no people, no flags covering the product. Layout: 1080×1920, tray in the middle third, empty date band in the center, keep top 14% and bottom 35% clear. Style: backyard table still, warm, not a supermarket flyer. Color palette: enamel cream, linen, teak, late-day gold. Text handling: no prices, “Labor Day,” percentages, or dates. Avoid fireworks, celebrity likenesses, and crowded prop piles.
Add the real weekend dates in Instagram after you confirm hours and stock. A wrong date on a still that holds five seconds still gets screenshotted.
Story vs Feed vs thumbnail
| Surface | Ratio | Typical size | What it must survive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram Story / Stories ad | 9:16 | 1080×1920 (ads also 1440×2560) | Top chrome, bottom reply or CTA |
| Instagram Feed ad | 4:5 or 1:1 | 1080×1350 or 1080×1080 | Grid crop and caption |
| YouTube thumbnail | 16:9 | 1280×720 | Tiny tile next to other videos |
| Pinterest pin | ~2:3 | taller portrait | Search grid, not full-screen UI |
Do not generate a 4:5 Feed ad and stretch it. Instagram will letterbox or zoom, and the safe zone you planned will not match the chrome.
Pre-post review checklist
- The file is 9:16. 1080×1920 is the working default. 1440×2560 is fine for paid Stories.
- The product or face sits in the middle third, not the top bar and not the reply bar.
- The top 14%, bottom 35%, and 6% side gutters have no essential type or logos.
- Overlay text is three words or fewer, added after generation, and matches the real offer.
- No Instagram UI, fake “Swipe up,” follower counts, or invented ratings appear in the pixels.
- The product shape, color, and included accessories match what a buyer receives.
- File is JPG or PNG, well under 30 MB. Prefer JPG for photos.
- A person viewed the still at phone size for five seconds. If the idea is unclear, regenerate.
OpenAI’s GPT Image 2 docs still warn that text placement can drift and that composition control is imperfect. Treat the model as a scene generator. Keep claims in editable type.
Limitations to respect
AI will happily draw a sold-out SKU, a holiday that is not this weekend, or a person who looks like a celebrity. It will also put your only headline under the CTA button. Stories ads must still follow Meta’s Advertising Standards. Organic Stories still have to be true. Do not use generated people as “customers” unless you disclose and your policy allows it. Do not promise a discount the cart does not apply.
If you need a circle highlight cover, generate extra margin around the subject. The profile highlight crop is tighter than the full 9:16 frame.
FAQ
What size should an AI Instagram Story be?
Meta’s Stories ads help page recommends 1080×1920. The Ads Guide also lists 1440×2560 at 9:16 for image ads. Minimums on the help page start at 600×1067. Produce at 1080×1920 or larger so the full-screen still does not look soft.
Should the AI write the offer on the Story?
Usually no. Generate the scene and an empty type band inside the center safe zone. Add two or three verified words, the real date, and any poll or link sticker in Instagram so you can change the offer without regenerating.
Is an Instagram Story the same as a Feed ad or a Reel cover?
No. A social ad for Feed is often 1:1 or 4:5. A Reel may share 9:16, but the UI chrome and the job (watch vs tap-through) differ. Generate a Story as a five-second still with empty chrome margins.
Why leave the bottom 35% empty?
Meta’s Ads Guide asks you to keep roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom, and 6% of each side free so the profile icon and call to action do not cover the creative. Organic Stories also draw a reply field at the bottom. Put the product and the headline in the middle.
Can I reuse a YouTube thumbnail as a Story?
Not by stretching. A 16:9 thumbnail is a small landscape tile. A Story is a tall phone screen. Generate a separate 9:16 master, or crop a taller source that already has the subject in the center.
Can I use a celebrity or a copied brand mascot?
Do not. Prompt original objects, original mascots, or products you actually sell. Copied likenesses create legal and policy risk and make the Story look interchangeable.
